Paint is a key element in vehicle repairs; partnering with paint suppliers has helped ensure consistency and correct application which are integral to both environmental and cost efficiencies.
Managing paint usage and minimising wastage, and guiding on best practice for mixing and application has had a significant impact on consistency across our bodyshops and minimising wastage.
We initiated this programme by developing close collaboration with our suppliers, including monitoring systems, open forums and regular meetings to discuss best practice usage and technical training needs. Together we redefined the supplier discussion away from sales volumes and pricing and focused on efficiencies and training.
Training comes through one-on-one sessions combined with intensive sessions at one of our in-house IMI accredited training academy covering elements such as mixing strategies and processes and spray gun setup, often with in person technical support from our suppliers. Progress has been monitored through regular usage reports to help identify teams which need support and champions who can help guide best practice. It is a continuous improvement programme with benefits including significant reduction in wastage and in paint-related CO2 emissions.

We maintain close relationships across all major vehicle platforms. Our deep knowledge of sourcing, in-life service and remarketing helps manage fleet supply to best fit customer requirements through industry and economic cycles.
Supporting our UK&I and Spanish fleet needs, our fleet teams have regularly been the largest buyers of LCVs in Europe, acquiring almost 5% of all new vans in the UK and 8% in Spain in FY2025.
Extensive relationships with OEMs reflect partnerships going back decades and through automotive cycles. This gives us the best understanding of supply availability and optimum holding cost and managing purchasing on both a strategic and tactical basis, taking advantage of any pockets of short-term supply. These relationships also allow us to provide feedback on new model development and after-sales requirements which can be invaluable to OEM strategic thinking, particularly in new technologies such as eLCVs.
What is important to us is to manage delivery timing throughout the year and to achieve diversity of model profiles (e.g. SWB vs LWB vehicles) alongside satisfying our core demand. We always have an eye to our total fleet profile and to managing the ultimate disposal exercise, where we look to avoid over-supply of any one model or vehicle type.
As a result, our approach comprises a ‘whole life’ view from the outset, with joined up consideration of the whole vehicle and market lifecycle, including future residual values and how best to manage acquisition, service, maintenance & repair, through to disposal.
It is the longstanding experience within our fleet teams with backgrounds ranging from roles at OEMs and daily rental fleets which gives us the confidence to purchase at large scale, and navigate both economic and industrial cycles and the development of new technologies and how these might impact vehicle fleet supply.
